Hellbound is a supernatural horror drama set in South Korea that dives into a world where otherworldly beings deliver ominous death decrees to individuals, sealing their fate in hell. In season 1, we witnessed these terrifying creatures, known as executors, carry out brutal punishments on “sinners.”
Season 2 amplifies the chaos: as the decrees continue to appear, society descends further into turmoil. The religious faction, The New Truth, is now led by a new chairman who struggles to uphold and spread the faith’s doctrine amidst growing skepticism. Meanwhile, a militant group known as the Arrowheads gains power, using violence to impose their twisted beliefs and drawing more followers in their wake. Adding to the pandemonium, previous sinners suddenly resurrect, throwing the world into deeper disarray. Meanwhile, the government sees an opportunity, manipulating tensions between rival organizations to regain control over the masses, though its true intentions remain murky.

It has been a few years since Jin-su died, and Jeong-Chil is the new chairman of New Truth. Along with New Truth, the Arrowheads have gained popularity. After Yeong-Jae and So-hyun sacrificed themselves for their child, Arrowhead started to make their interpretation of it. It’s Judgement Day, and Jung Gyeong-seok is to die on this day as per the decree. A member of the Arrowhead, Miss Sunshine, uses the example of Young-Jae and So-Hyun and says she will jump into the fire to seek forgiveness from the gods and save Gyeong-Seok.
The crime Gyeong-seok committed was in school when he was a bully. Because of this, a few of his batch mates deal with mental health issues. It’s time for Gyeong-seok to die. As the executors arrive, many Arrowheads jump on Gyeong-seok, and Miss Sunshine is one among them. Unfortunately, along with Gyeong-seok, the other Arrowheads die as well.
Why does Sugyeong want to work with New Truth?
The Arrowhead leader Pinwheel is furious with New Truth as he believes Jeong-Chil is spreading false doctrine teaching. The next day, Jeong-Chil is to give a lecture. While driving, Arrowhead members attack him. With a lot of difficulty, Jeong-Chil reaches his office, and the President’s secretary, Lee Sugyeong, is waiting for Jeong-Chil. Not wasting any time, Sugyeong gets to the point by implying that the New Truth is losing followers, especially after the baby is saved. Even though New Truth did come out and clarify the doctrine, Arrowheads managed to gain followers. Everything is laid out in the open as Sugyeong calls New Truth and Jeong-Chil a fraud, and he does not deny it.
As the elections are going to be held soon, Sugyeong/Government and New Truth need to work together to stop the opposition and the Arrowheads. Furthermore, Sugyeong knows that Jeong-Chil is hiding Jung-Ja after her resurrection. It’s been four years, and Jung-Ja has only been communicating a little with the New Truth members in the past year. So Sugyeong suggests bringing out a new doctrine in six months, and Jung-Ja will be the face of it. However, Jeong-Chil is sure Jin-su is resurrected and believes the people will trust Jin-su over any other person. To find out any information about Jin-su, Sugyeong needs to find Kyung-hun. In the last scene, we see Hee-Jung having some sort of pain, and Kyung-hun takes care of Hee-Jung.
Hellbound (Season 2) Episode 2 Recap:
The episode opens with Kyung-hun consulting a doctor about Hee-Jung’s health. Unfortunately, Hee-Jung’s health is deteriorating, so the doctor suggests moving Hee-Jung to a hospital with permanent care. Wanting some time to think, Kyung-hun heads out and notices a black van which looks suspicious. Pretending not to notice, Kyung-hun hops on a bus and heads back home. Sadly, the black van follows the bus. When Kyung-hun gets down, he makes his way inside a market to escape the men following him. Successfully, Kyung-hun escapes and reaches his hiding place to find the New Truth members dragging Hee-Jung and putting her inside their van.
Luckily, the black van arrives in time, and it turns out they are Sodo individuals. From the van, Hye-jin gets out and fights the New Truth men. As everyone is fighting, some New Truth members drive off with Hee-Jung in the van. So Hye-jin chases after them and rescues Hee-Jung. After driving for a while, they halt, and Hee-Jin asks about Jin-su’s location. During this conversation, Kyung-hun reveals that Hee-Jung has cancer and has less than three months to live.
Eventually, Kyung-hun gives the location to find Jin-su. But before leaving, he asks Hye-jin to take care of the child who escaped the executors. Meanwhile, Jeong-Chil informs Sugyeong about Hye-Jin. Instead of being mad, Sugyeong is relieved that Sodo has rescued Hee-Jung and Kyung-hun and not the Arrowheads.
Who witnesses Jin-su’s resurrection?
However, Sugyeong asks Jeong-Chil to make an announcement about Jung-Ja’s resurrection and make a doctrine called the New Will in three months. The Sodo group has given the child who escaped the executors a name: Jae-hyeon. Meanwhile, Sodo members have given a secret accommodation to Kyung-hun and Hee-Jung. Because Hee-Jung’s health is terrible, Kyung-hun does not reveal to her about Jin-su’s death or his chances of resurrection. This will shatter Hee-Jung’s beliefs, as it goes against everything she believes in. The next day, Jeong-Chil announces to the public about Jung-Ja’s resurrection and the New Will, which God tells through Jung-Ja.
The Sodo people believe there is a reason for Jae-Hyeon to survive the decree when no one else could. Now, Sodo people have placed cameras and motion detectors in an abandoned orphanage to keep track of Jin-su’s resurrection. The man monitoring this is Chen Sehyeong, who wants to meet Jin-su more than anyone else. Three months later, Sehyeong notices Jin-su resurrecting and drives to the location. On the way, Sehyeong sees a naked Jin-su walking on the road and immediately informs someone about it. After that, Sehyeong greets and interacts with Jin-su.
Hellbound (Season 2) Episode 3 Recap:
The episode begins with Jin-su having a nightmare. Right now, Jin-su is in Sehyeong’s care. Unfortunately, it’s taking time for Jin-su to come back to reality as he keeps seeing the monsters everywhere. After calming down, Jin-su asks for a computer. After giving the laptop, Sehyeong steps out to inform the Sodo members about Jin-su’s behavior. During that time, Jin-su googles about Arrowhead and New Truth and also discovers about Jae-Hyeon.
As Sehyeong enters the room, Jin-su sees a CCTV application and realizes it’s his resurrection video. Seeing this, Sehyeong is ready to inject Jin-su. After some struggle, Sehyeong injects Jin-su and drives him to Sodo. Meanwhile, Hye-jin fights with the other Sodo members to help rescue Jung-Ja, as her going live can cause problems. At the same time, Jung-Ja’s children are in touch with Hye-Jin.
On the other hand, Jeong-Chil emotionally blackmails Jung-Ja and convinces her to tell the world about the New Will of God. The Sodo members have decided to stick to the protocol to deal with Jin-su as they want to know about the after-death experience and if hell is real or not. Now Jin-su is tied up, but Sehyeong does not plaster Jin-su’s mouth as he wants some answers. In a flashback, we learn why Sehyeong was so eager to meet Jin-su. When the monsters started to kill people, and it was in the news, Sehyeong’s wife Ji-won began to get influenced by Jin-su’s talks.
Why does Sehyeong rescue Jin-su?
It was curiosity that turned into an obsession. During Jung-Ja’s demonstration, Ji-won and Sehyeong were among the crowd. When the executors arrived, everyone was afraid except Ji-won, who was eerily thrilled. Even after Jin-su’s disappearance, Ji-won kept a watch on New Truth. One day on the way to work, Ji-won saw the video of Jae-hyeon being spared, as well as Arrowhead’s take on the matter. After that day, Ji-won became an integral part of Arrowheads.
During one of the demonstrations, Ji-won, AKA Miss Sunshine, burns one of her hands while trying to rescue a sinner. This Ji-won interprets as God forgiving her. By this time, there was already a distance between Sehyeong and Ji-won. During another execution, Ji-won loses her life while trying to save a sinner.
Hearing this, Jin-su provokes Sehyeong, saying Ji-won gets pleasure from these executions that were lacking in her marriage. So Sehyeong beats Jin-su, but Jin-su starts to brainwash Sehyeong. Now, Jin-su says handing him over to Sodo is useless as the truth Sodo is seeking may not be what they expect it to be, and when that happens, Sodo will kill him.
This is his last chance to save the world where no one goes through what Ji-won did. Now Sehyeong tapes Jin-su’s mouth and hands him over to the Sodo members. After driving for a while, Sehyeong changes his mind and crashes his car into Sodo’s car. Using a Taser, he hurts the other Sodo members and rescues Jin-su. Now Jin-su wants Sehyeong to take him to the Arrowhead leader as the only people who can change the world are the Arrowheads.
Hellbound (Season 2) Episode 4 Recap:
The episode begins with New Truth and the government planning on how and when to bring Jung-Ja in front of the public. Meanwhile, Sehyeong manages to get in touch with the Arrowheads and takes Jin-su with him. In Jeong-Chil’s office, Sugyeong analyzes all the interviews with Jung-Ja and realizes that Jung-Ja probably knows how someone will die. Six months ago, the Vice Chairman died, and it seemed like Jung-Ja knew how he would die. Furthermore, when Jung-Ja looked at Sugyeong, she couldn’t see anything. Soon after Sugyeong leaves, Jeong-Chil meets Jung-Ja.
When Jung-Ja sees Jeong-Chil, she sees images of a phoenix in a beautiful landscape. Meanwhile, some Sodo members refuse to help Hye-Jin rescue Jung-Ja, especially since they have lost Jin-su. On the other hand, the Arrowhead leader Pinwheel is well protected. Despite that, Sehyeong and Jin-su have access. As soon as Pinwheel sees Jin-su, he is moved to tears. Now Jin-su and Pinwheel make plans to meet Jung-Ja while the other Arrowheads lock Sehyeong in a room. The preparations for Jung-Ja’s return are ongoing, and Hye-Jin is ready to rescue Jung-Ja. Before leaving, Hye-Jin gives Jae-Hyeon her favorite toy.
How are Sodo members planning to rescue Jung-Ja?
Outside, a fellow Sodo member, Sung-jip, gives Hye-Jin a gun. But Hye-Jin throws all the bullets except one, as one bullet is enough to make people believe the gun is fully loaded. After a chat with Pinwheel, Jin-su meets Sehyeong and tells him that Jin-su does not care about this world. The reason Jin-su wants to meet Jung-Ja is because he wants to talk to someone who has been to hell and suffered as Jin-su sees the executors chasing him every time he looks in the mirror. The intention is clear, so Sehyeong hits Jin-su, and the Arrowheads intervene and kill Sehyeong. It’s the day of Jung-Ja appearing in front of the public. Among the audience, there are New Truth members, Arrowheads pretending to support New Truth, and Sodo members.
A man and woman greet Hye-jin and Sung-jip, but Hye-jin still needs to learn what the plan is. In the parking lot, Pinwheel and Jin-su, along with a few Arrowheads, go live, claiming to reveal the truth. These Arrowheads barge into the building, attacking the New Truth members. On the stage, Jung-Ja is overwhelmed by the crowd. Just then, thumping is heard, and the whole crowd is afraid. Now Hye-jin realizes that the woman she met earlier received the decree, and this is the chance to rescue Jung-Ja. The New Truth members hurriedly take Jung-Ja to safety just as Hye-Jin and Sung-Jip are running towards the stage.
Hellbound (Season 2) Episode 5 Recap:
The episode begins with Sung-jip meeting Sugyeong in an abandoned building. Before becoming an important member of Sodo, Sung-jip used to work for Sugyeong for political campaigns. After a long time, Sugyeong reached out to ask Sung-jip to kidnap Jung-Ja. The way the world should work, according to Sugyeong, is to make sure two opposing ideologies are always going against each other. When this happens, the political organization can step in to bring order yet give slight freedom to people. Hearing this, Sung-jip is disappointed that Sugyeong is no longer a woman with principles. However, Sung-jip agrees to help.
Currently, Hye-jin and Sung-jip chase after Jung-Ja, and the woman is killed by the executors. In an office somewhere, Sugyeong controls the New Truth as well as Sodo. Now, the Arrowheads have entered the main building, so Sugyeong gives instructions to Sodo and Jeong-Chil. In the basement, Jeong Hyeok-sang pretends to be a janitor to get out of the building and waits for his executors to arrive while keeping a van ready to take Jung-Ja and Sodo members out. While the police and Arrowheads are fighting in the building, Pinwheel goes live once again and reveals Jin-Su’s return. Jin-su asks the public to bring Jung-Ja to him as he wants to meet her.
Will Hye-jin rescue Jeong-Chil?
This is a motivation for Arrowheads to attack everyone. As Hye-jin and Sung-jip look for Jung-Ja, they bump into some Arrowhead members. They fight each other, and in a desperate moment, Hye-jin shoots in the air. The noise is heard throughout, alerting everyone about Sodo’s presence. Luckily, Hye-jin and Sung-jip escape. But, Jeong Hyeok-sang is caught, and Jeong Hyeok-sang says he’s the janitor. Pinwheel is ready to let the man go. However, Jin-su is sure the man has received the decree after seeing the timer and realizes he is with Sodo. In another part of the building, the Arrowheads find Jeong-Chil. At the same time, Hye-jin and Sung-jip rescue Jung-Ja, leaving Jeong-Chil to deal with the Arrowheads.
When Jeong-Chil calls Sugyeong for help, she does not help after learning that Jung-Ja has been saved. Now, Jin-su appears in front of Jeong-Chil, and he threatens to reveal Jin-su’s secret. Unfortunately, nobody believes anything Jeong-Chil says. As Jung-Ja predicts, he dies after seeing two phoenixes painted on the ceiling. Suddenly, Jin-su looks at himself in the mirror and sees the executors, so Jin-su falls to the ground, afraid. Meanwhile, Jung-Ja tells Hye-jin that she can see Hye-jin’s death. Hye-jin will die near some toys, specifically an elephant toy.
Hellbound (Season 2) Episode 6 Recap:
The episode begins with news reports about the event and the return of Jin-Su. The Arrowheads are also livestreaming, showing Hyeok-sang’s face. In that room, Jin-su notices Jeong-Chil’s phone and sees Sugyeong’s number on it. In the same building, Hye-jin is ready to leave, and Sung-jip gets a message from Sugyeong to follow through with the plan when Hyeok-sang is executed.
Jin-su messages Sugyeong from Jeong-Chil’s phone. Seeing the messages, Sugyeong calls Jin-su. Jin-su understands the divide-and-rule game Sugyeong is playing. Therefore, he asks Sugyeong to let him meet Jung-Ja, and after that, Sugyeong can take Jung-Ja wherever she pleases. The demonstration begins, and Hye-jin, Sung-jip, and Jung-Ja reach the parking lot.
However, Arrowheads wait for them in the car and start attacking Hye-jin and Sung-jip. Meanwhile, Pinwheel is on a live stream. Luckily, Jin-su arrives and clarifies his doubts with Jung-Ja. Unfortunately, Jung-Ja does not see the executors Jin-su sees As they converse, they realize both their hell and their experiences are different.
However, Jung-Ja tells Jin-su that the executor is inside him and he has been a coward; hence, he sees the executors. So Jin-su looks at his reflection in the mirror, and the executor runs towards him. Suddenly, the executor stops, and Jin-su can’t see the executor in real life or the mirror. Soon after that, Jin-su starts to feel pain in his chest and spits blood. When Jin-su looks at the blood, he goes into a vortex, and something pushes him.
Hellbound (Season 2) Ending Explained:
The monster/executor within Jin-su is unleashed. One of Jin-su’s hands takes over, and soon, all of Jin-su is turned into a monster/executor. The Arrowheads and others present are shocked to see this. Taking the opportunity, Hye-jin, Sung-jip, and Jung-Ja get into a van and drive. At this point, Jin-su holds on to the steering wheel and asks Hye-jin for help. Even though Hye-jin tries her best, she can’t help Jin-su, and he jumps into the vortex after completely turning into an executor.
Despite these significant events, Sugyeong wants to carry out the plan. Now, Hye-jin drives them to a scrapyard where they will meet Jung-Ja’s kids. As they walk, Hye-jin sees a painting of an elephant with toys and remembers Jung-Ja’s prediction. Immediately, Hye-jin ducks and escapes from the bullet Sung-jip fired. A cat-and-mouse chase ensues between them. The reason Sung-jip does this is because he believes Hye-jin is creating chaos in this world.
In the end, Hye-jin handcuffs Sung-jip to a tire. After that, a man arrives in a car, so Hye-jin asks Jung-Ja to go with the man who will take her to her children. Before leaving, Jung-Ja tells Hye-jin that the world will end soon, so she should do whatever she wants. In Sugyeong’s office, Sugyeong receives a decree. At the same time, near the New Truth building, the police officers and Arrowheads all receive a decree. For the first time, 1000s of people received a decree at the same time.
Meanwhile, Hee-Jung dies from cancer. Jung-Ja realizes this man is her son and is proud of how much he has grown. Hye-jin adopts Jae-hyeon. On the way home, Jae-Hyeon sees a drawing representing what her parents did for her and asks Hye-jin about it. So Hye-jin promises to tell Jae-Hyeon everything about her parents. In the last scene, we see when Jae-hyeon’s parents die; even Jae-hyeon dies but is immediately resurrected.
In the end, as Jung-Ja predicts, the world indeed has come to an end, not in the sense that humanity has come to an end but in terms of a paradigm shift. Especially with the mass decrees, many people will die soon, and there needs to be better religious and political organizations. The last scene gives us an answer to the ending of season 1, as the question of why the baby didn’t die always remains. But in the last scene, we see Jae-hyeon had died but was revived.
Jae-Hyeon was probably the first person to resurrect. Considering the theme of the show, the resurrection probably represents rebirth. The Sodo group does not exist anymore, and this makes sense as the world is going to change soon. Jin-su turns into an executor himself. The way the season has ended, there is a chance for season 3 to be made. The new season will probably explore this new world more deeply.
Hellbound (Season 2) Review:
In Hellbound Season 2, the story deepens, weaving intricate themes of hell, politics, religion, and human nature into a richer narrative. While season 1 emphasizes retribution, condemning sinners to hell, season 2 takes an intriguing shift, exploring the repercussions of the decrees themselves. This shift elevates the storyline, replacing the somewhat repetitive “character eliminations” of season 1 with a more nuanced exploration of consequence and belief.
From the very beginning, viewers catch a glimpse of what the hell might truly feel like. By the series’ end, as Jin-su and Jung-ja reflect on their experiences, it becomes clear that hell is uniquely personal for each individual. The series deftly tackles abstract ideas, like hell and sin, without feeling preachy. The Arrowheads’ public demonstration is a striking moment, as they reveal a mere bully as the condemned sinner, offering a refreshing shift from the extreme sins that marked season 1. This choice highlights how even everyday wrongs might lead to damnation, challenging viewers to reflect on moral ambiguity.
The season mirrors real-world issues, interweaving societal conflicts and creating a thought-provoking narrative. We witness an intense struggle between religion and politics, each vying for dominance. Soon, The New Truth transforms into a full-fledged cult, exposing the dangers of blind belief and social manipulation in a contemporary context.
The show explores the ideological divide between New Truth and Arrowheads. New Truth presents a meticulously controlled, cult-like approach, subtly brainwashing its followers, while Arrowheads represent the chaotic justice of those who exploit religious doctrine for personal vendettas, stirring violence and fear.
Hellbound season 2 keeps audiences riveted with outstanding performances and unflinching storytelling, offering sharp social commentary along the way. The dialogue is another highlight, filled not with poetic lines but with the unfiltered truths of reality. Especially with characters like Sugyeong and Jin-su, their conversations reveal a blunt honesty about how the world operates. While season 1 delivers supernatural horror, season 2 shifts focus, unveiling a different horror—one that’s disturbingly grounded in real-world issues.
