I’m a day-one Cobra Kai fan. I binged the first season on YouTube Red (!) and wrote that Cobra Kai was one of the best shows of 2018. That was six years ago! As an old-school Karate Kid fanatic, I appreciate that Cobra Kai is the rare revival that enhances the source material.

I can usually tell where Cobra Kai’s going, but man oh man did I not see that big Season 6, Part 2 twist coming. You know the drill… obvious spoilers ahead.

The headline coming out of Season 6, Episode 10 (“Eunjangdo”) is that Cobra Kai’s star pupil, Kwon Jae-Sung (played to perfection by Brandon H. Lee), is dead after a wild brawl that took place during the Sekai Taikai.

No wonder Mr. Miyagi hated tournaments so much, right?

Sekai Taikai Results:

Season 6, Episode 9 concluded with Miyagi-Do eliminating Cobra Kai from the Sekai Taikai and advancing to the semifinals. So it looks like the Miyagi-Do/Cobra Kai rivalry is finally over, right? Wrong! “Eunjangdo” (which translates to silver knife) begins with Sekai Taikai host Gunther announcing that Sensei Ivanov’s Udar Tigra dojo is disqualified for taking steroids.

Better luck next time, Britt Baker!

That means… Cobra Kai is back in the tourney, baby! The men’s and women’s final fours are set as Sam vs. Tory and Axel vs. Robby are announced for the semifinals.

Kwon, who defeats Diego Aguilar, and Zara, who’s victorious over Maria Alvarez, advance to the finals. Robby and Axel begin their fight and, holy Ivan Drago, it doesn’t go well for Robby. He’s down 0-5 when all hell breaks loose.

Axel shoves Robby off the mat and into the Cobra Kai area. Kwon cheap shots Robby, which leads to Miguel running over to defend his friend. That leads to Axel, jealous that Miguel is dating Sam, shoving Miguel to the mat. Things are extremely tense but manageable… until out of nowhere Sensei Ivanov blindsides Gunther, knocking him out with a punch.

This leads to, you guessed it, an all-out karate war! Classic Cobra Kai.

The next ten minutes are lit, gifting Cobra Kai fans with the most impressive fight sequence in the show’s storied history… which is saying a lot. There are too many fun/memorable moments to cover here, so we’ll stick with the beats that drive our main story.

During the melee, Kreese checks to make sure he has his eunjangdo knife (the one he retrieved during Season 6, Episode 2) as he attempts to find and kill Terry Silver. He loses his trusty weapon during the brawl, which, you know is probably why you shouldn’t bring your antique knife to a karate tournament.

The battle continues as Kwon eventually kicks Sam. This angers Axel, who attacks Kwon and gets the better of him during their scuffle. Kwon finds Chekhov’s, err, I mean Kreese’s knife and seemingly tries to use it against Axel. The two simultaneously attempt to hit each other with badass spinny kicks (that’s the technical term) but Kwon fatally lands on the knife.

Everyone stops fighting as Daniel rolls Kwon over to discover the knife sticking out of his chest. Gunther yells to cut the live feed, and, well, that’s a wrap on Season 6, Part 2.

So… Who Wins The Sekai Taikai?

Nobody. Kwon and Zara advanced to the finals, Axel had a 5-0 lead on Robby, and the Sam/Tory bout didn’t take place. The Sekai Taikai had no real winners… although I guess it did have one big loser. RIP, Kwon.

Did Kwon Die In The Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 Finale?

Yep. I know people were speculating about Miguel’s fate after the Season 2 finale, but that was different. Kwon is dead.

What Does This Mean For Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 3?

Nobody knows. During an interview with Collider, the Cobra Kai co-creators talked about wanting to upend the audience’s expectations. Mission accomplished, guys!

“We like being in a place where you have an anxiousness of, ‘Well, where do you go after that? How does the show respond? How does the world respond?'”, Josh Heald told the outlet.

“We’re going to be covering the span of time that our students on the show graduate high school,” Hayden Schlossberg added when talking about the final five episodes. “So, you know, we’re going to leave the series with you knowing where their childhoods ended up and as they go off into adulthood. So, I can’t say exactly what happens in episode 611, and whether we’re still on the mat with Kwon’s blood or if we’re years later in Nantucket at Miguel’s Crab Shack, but you’ll find out the fate of our characters.”

Kwon’s death will undeniably be a wake-up call for the Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai dojos. There are decades of bad blood between Daniel, Johnny, Kreese, and Silver. If the death of a student doesn’t lead to some serious reflection, nothing will.

Five episodes remain before Cobra Kai karate kicks off into the sunset, and we can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Parts 1 and 2 are now on Netflix. The final installment, Part 3, debuts February 13, 2025, on the streamer.
