30 Donut County Lets Players Control a Sinkhole Consuming Every Piece of a Town
Donut County Encourages Players to Give In to Their Destructive Urges
✕ Remove Ads
At first glance, a physics-based game like Donut County might not sound like it can offer much. That said, there's nothing more mindlessly entertaining than controlling a hole and gobbling up everything in sight — be it people or ice cream cones. In a quaint town, an odd sinkhole has appeared, taking the citizens along with it. Players control that hole, while also flashing to scenes of the townspeople discussing the events.

The mechanics of Donut County are simple but still require enough thoughtful gameplay to keep it interesting. The hole grows each time players eat something, and players must clear each item at every level. So, if there are big items, players have to first eat the smaller things to grow big enough to swallow the larger things. Donut County is a relaxing single-player game that is expanding Xbox Game Pass' growing library.

29 A Plague Tale: Requiem Is an Engaging Story That Feels Like a Classic Linear Game
This Indie Game is Sure to Leave an Emotional Mark on Players
The sequel to the underrated A Plague Tale: Innocence, A Plague Tale: Requiem continues the story of Amicia and Hugo de Rune. The de Runes were hunted and pushed from their home by the French Inquisition. This is because of Hugo's relationship with the Macula, an entity that takes the shape of the Black Plague. Amicia, Hugo's older sister, still struggles to protect her little brother through a series of stressful stealth areas, rabid rats and bulky guards.

While available on Xbox's PC Game Pass, A Plague Tale: Requiem feels much cleaner to play on a controller than a keyboard and mouse. A great console game, A Plague Tale: Requiem also offers every piece necessary for an awesome single-player video game. The combat is mostly stealth-based, or at least strategic. The story is linear, but in a way that doesn't feel restrictive for the players.

28 Another Crab's Treasure Puts a Twist on the FromSoft Formula
Sick Beats and a Stylish World Make This Difficult Game All Too Enjoyable
✕ Remove Ads
While not created by FromSoftware, Another Crab's Treasure is an incredible Soulslike game with enough whimsy and silliness to keep it refreshing. For once, players aren't dreary, half-dead knights of some fantasy world fighting. They are, instead, a little crab trying to get a shell. At its core, Another Crab's Treasure plays almost exactly like a Soulsgame should. But, the game does away with swords and shields. Instead, it's forks and shells.
Another Crab's Treasure's under-the-sea vibe is delightful and vibrant, offering a more exciting atmosphere than a fearful one as seen in typical Souls games. The different kinds of shells are creative, ranging from bottle caps to shotgun shells. The boss fights are exciting, but this game's strongest feature is its music. The hip-hop beats are ridiculously catchy, making the fights all the more entertaining. Souls-style games aren't for everyone, but for anyone who subscribes to the Xbox Game Pass, there's no reason to miss out on this game.

27 Inscryption Is So Much More Than Just a Deckbuilder Game
This Game Is Best Experienced Without Too Many Spoilers
Deckbuilders are fun enough for those who enjoy them. All goals point to players collecting the right type of cards to fit into their decks. Inscryption merges the deckbuilding genre with retro RPGs, horror games, and 4th wall-breaking moments. Inscryption is essentially broken down into different acts. The player awakens to find themselves seated across from a spooky fellow in a spooky cabin. The player need only beat the man at his own game.
While there is a free-roam exploration loop that allows the player to interact with the surrounding cabin, the basis of Inscryption revolves around the player having card battles with the antagonist. It's hard enough to beat the first part of the game, but after that, the game only explodes into a completely different style. Inscryption is a one-of-a-kind game, truly—the story is compelling, and the world encourages finding secrets and playing smarter. Those with access to the Game Pass Ultimate should make sure to pick up this newly added title.

26 Sifu Mixes the Art of Kung Fu With a Soulslike Combat System
Sifu Is a Very Satisfying Beat-Em'-Up Game
Sifu is an inventive take on the Souls genre, as a central game mechanic is exactly what the entire plot revolves around. In Sifu, players get to choose between a boy or a girl — the game kicks off with the young kung fu pupil watching their father and Sifu get killed. Thus, the character goes on a journey to get revenge on all those who were present. However, the character is essentially immortal.
✕ Remove Ads
Like all Soulslike games, death is inevitable. In Sifu, though, every death makes the character older, yet stronger. The character begins at the age of 20. Upon the first death, the character will age up to 21. That's because the character will age equal to the number of deaths per run. After each death, the player gets older but can unlock new abilities and combos. Aside from that, Sifu's combat is difficult, yet fun and cathartic to learn. There's virtually no input delay, making it an extremely precise game with perfectly timed parries and dodges.

24 Titanfall 2 Has a Great Single-Player Campaign
Enjoy a Slick Futuristic Buddy Cop Storyline in Titanfall 2
As a franchise, Titanfall is one of the most underrated series ever. Respawn Entertainment knocked it out of the park with both games, but the second game is even better thanks to the addition of one of the best single-player campaigns an FPS has ever had. It isn’t long, but it’s a highlight of the game and something every fan of the series talks about after finishing.
In Titanfall 2, players take on the roles of the giant robot BT-7274 and its pilot, Jack Cooper. Across a 6-8 hour campaign, players will grow attached to both characters, as this is easily one of the best buddy cop stories of the 2010s. At the same time, Respawn wasn’t afraid to put Titanfall’s incredible movement options to good use, as the game is full of opportunities for stylish parkour and platforming.

23 The Quarry Provides a Spooky Narrative Adventure
Fans of 80s Horror Should Check Out The Quarry
Most gamers want to play spooky games during October. When it comes to narrative-focused scary games, few developers do it better than Supermassive Games. Supermassive managed to make each of their games feel like playing a horror film, including The Quarry, so even new gamers can have a terrifying yet fun experience.

With The Quarry, fans of 80s horror in particular will find plenty to love. There are references to several classic slasher movies, as they go for a setup that never gets old: a bunch of teenagers at a summer camp up against some supernatural monsters with a grudge. Fans who love jump scares and replaying to see just how many characters they can save—or not—should make a point to check this title out.

22 Wargroove 2 Provides an Awesome Tactical RPG Experience
Wargroove 2 Features Beautiful Pixel Art and Provides a Deep Fantasy Adventure
Chucklefish's Wargroove is designed for people who want to experience Advance Wars off Nintendo consoles. Players will quickly find themselves pulled into this glorious fantasy world thanks to its lush environments and glorious pixel art characters. It's not all cuteness though, as the world of Aurania is full of dangerous conflicts. Set not long after the last game, Wargroove 2 reminds players how tenuous peace can be.

Of course, most tactics games place a focus on the story, and Wargroove 2 is no exception. On top of the tutorial campaign, three different campaigns tell the story from three perspectives, before tying it all together for the end. Even when players are tired of playing the main storyline, they can look forward to Conquest, a rogue-like version of the game. Thanks to procedural generation, Conquest can provide a new experience each time players check out the campaign.
21 Trials of Mana Offers a Classic JRPG Experience
Trials of Mana Remakes a Great SNES Game While Still Feeling Modern
Square-Enix waited so long to bring the third Mana game over, they just decided to remake it. To their credit, Trials of Mana feels worth the wait though. It still retains the pure feeling of an SNES RPG despite looking like a modern game and having modern quality-of-life features.
✕ Remove Ads
Like other classic JRPGs, Trials of Mana has a straightforward story. The Mana Tree that keeps the world going is dying, and the only chance to protect it is drawing the Sword of Mana and battling against an ancient evil known as the Benevodons. While the opening might feel basic though, there are enough twists in the story to keep players interested. At the same time, since it's impossible to have all the characters at once, players are encouraged to come back to Trials of Mana for more playthroughs.

20 Starfield Lives Up to Its Lofty Ambitions
Starfield Offers an Entire Galaxy For Players to Make Their Home
Much to the relief of many Bethesda faithful, Starfield became a massive success. Bethesda's first new RPG franchise in decades, Starfield allowed the developer to take a prolonged break from The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Fortunately, Bethesda's bet paid off as Starfield is Bethesda's most expansive and most ambitious RPG to date.
Starfield is more than just "Fallout in Space" as it puts an even greater emphasis on exploring, giving players over a thousand planets to visit. The game is nearly limitless, which extends to its innovative New Game Plus mode, which will blow players away once they start it. Even setting aside that mystery though, players who check out Starfield can look forward to years of official updates, and some of the coolest sci-fi mods ever.

17 Octopath Traveler 2 Improves on the Original In Every Way
The JRPG Sequel Shows the Best Way to Create Love Letters to Classic Eras

16 Wartales Is a New Twist on a Classic Genre
Classic Tactical RPG Combat Meets Survival In This New Franchise
✕ Remove Ads
In 2023, developer Shiro Games released Wartales, which joined the new tactical RPG renaissance alongside many other amazing titles. What was once a rare genre is so crowded these days that if there isn’t something to help a game stand out it’ll get lost in the shuffle. For War Tales, something special is adding a strong survival element.
In Wartales, players lead a collection of mercenaries across the land. To survive, it’s not enough to win every battle. Players also have to gather materials for clothing and hunt for food to keep their camp of mercenaries satisfied. What helps the game stand out is that there’s effectively no real main quest. The developers specifically wanted to create a game where every quest was optional, so the players only had to tackle exactly what they wanted and nothing else. Wartales’ main story is proving everyone here can survive.

15 Doom (2016) Is Old School Arcade Shooting Fun
Doom Provides a Massive, Yet Necessary Shift From Modern FPS Gaming
Doom (2016) feels like a rite of passage for fans of FPS shooters. What began as the original and revolutionary Doom on PC in 1993 has since expanded into a fully fleshed-out action adventure with multiple iterations. The 2016 game saw immediate success, being nominated for "Game of the Year" at The Game Awards and winning several awards at the NAVGTR Awards show.
In Doom, players should expect fast-paced gunplay, tons of exploration options, and more over-the-top blood and guts than they'll know what to do with. All this action is backed by some impressively designed levels. 12 Senua's Saga: Hellblade II Is a Remarkable Sequel Exclusive To Xbox
Senua's Saga Is a Graphical Achievement and a Technical Marvel
In 2017, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice surprised many with its originality, stunning visuals, dark Norse-like world, and engaging gameplay. The original Hellblade has become a great argument in favor of video games being art. Its sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, tops it in many ways.
In Hellblade II, Senua sets off to Iceland to free her people from the tyranny of Viking marauders. Hellblade II includes a brand-new fighting system, a dynamic weather system, and a greater emphasis on exploration while still maintaining the psychological horror fans have come to love in the growing franchise. Senua still struggles with her psychosis, and it's fascinating how Hellblade II continues to build upon this narratively and in gameplay.

Set in the dark, foreboding landscapes of Viking-age Scandinavia, Senua battles both physical and psychological demons in her quest to confront the Norse gods and seek redemption. The game builds on the intense narrative and psychological depth of its predecessor, featuring stunning visuals, immersive sound design, and visceral combat.
